Temple Architecture:

Since ancient India, temple engineering has exceeded all expectations. The particular style of the temple in various parts had an effect. A combination of climatic, ethnic and historical diversities. Above all, this also depends on various styles used in the development of the temples.

Old Indian temples are of six types.

1. Nagara

The Nagara style has many differences but has two specific styles. The first is the presence of a few designs or rathakas at the centre. Hence a cross-shape is seen at every angle. The second is the tower or Shikhara plan. This plan follows the one centre squares and circles. It continuously closes in a raised bend that extends upwards. Eg. 3. Badami-Chalukyas

4. Gadag

The Gadag style or Western Chalukya architecture is a specific style. It originated from the old Dravida style of architecture. It expalins the Karnata Dravida tradition. An important feature of this style is articulation. E.g Saraswati temple of Trikuteshwara and the Kasivisvesvara Temple.

5. Kalinga

This style has three kinds of temples thriving in Odisha and Northern Andhra Pradesh. These three styles are Pidha, Rekha and Khakhara Deula. The first two are connected with Shiva, Surya and Vishnu and the third with the Goddesses Durga. The word Deula means temple. Eg. The Jagannath Temple and Lingaraj Temple of Orissa.

6. Maru-Gurjara

The temple architecture is notable in two ways. It is called Maru-Gurjara and Maha-Maru in Rajasthan. The first design is an elite Western Indian compositional style. It varies from the temple engineering of North India. Due to its rich design, it is associated with the Hoysala temple. E.g. Nagda temple in Rajasthan.
